Children who are 8-12 years old can lose up to a litre of sweat during two hours of activity on a hot day. (1,2)

bottles

Did you know?

· Children produce more metabolic heat per kilogram of body weight during exercise and also have a reduced sweating capacity. This therefore lessens their ability to lose heat through sweat evaporation. (3)
· Children, like adults, frequently do not have the physiological drive to drink enough water to replenish fluid loss during prolonged exercise. (4)
· Australia’s physical activity recommendation, as per NSW Health, for 5-12 year olds is a minimum of 60 minutes per day, but more is better, even up to several hours a day. (5)

So what can we do as parents, coaches, trainers and care givers?
· Encourage kids to drink before, during and after any physical activity and take a drink break every 20 minutes at least.
· Pack a bottle for your child’s practice and game, and consider fluids an essential piece of safety equipment for any sport or physical activity.
